    Veteran's Day 2006

    The Ellison Family at War

Throughout the history of our family we have had family that fought in EVERY war our country has fought in. I know family members that served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Viet Nam, The Persian Gulf War, and Operation Enduring Freedom. I myself fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I returned last year but have waited before really discussing anything. It really seems like it was years ago. But in reality I was there last year. I will briefly tell you a little bit about what was going on over there. Here is a picture of my driver, my gunner, and me in Kuwait the day before we started oconvoy to Kirkuk,Iraq. The trip was 700 miles, and took us 4 days.

Being over there really makes you appreciate everything you have here in the States. It also makes you realize the value of life in general. Especially when you see people lose theirs at such a young age. It also will make you angry. Angry at politicians and world leaders who use young men and women as chess pieces for causes that are not more important than the lives of those people.
It will also make you angry at people in the United States who take for granted the security and the opportunities the have. We have so much here, yet we complain and carelessly waste all that we have access to.

Earl Franklin, son of Texanna Ellison

This is a picture of Earl when he was in the 4th Infantry Division. Ironically, when I was in Iraq I wore the same combat patch almost 60 years after him.

Happy Veterans Day to all The Ellison Family Veterans!

    Obie Ellison, US Air Force
    Marcus Ellison, US ARMY

There is a New Chief In Town

Cathy Ellison is named Police Chief in Austin! And becomes the first African-American female to do so.

    CHIEF CATHY ELLISON

    Thursday, May 18, 2006

Assistant Police Chief Cathy Ellison said that when she became an Austin police officer in 1978, she never thought she would stay with the department for more than a few years.
Nearly 30 years later, Ellison, 49, is 17 days from serving as the department's first African American female acting chief.
Stan Knee, who became Austin police chief in 1997, announced Tuesday that he will be taking a job as an adviser and mentor to Afghanistan's interior minister.
Ellison had a big grin on her face as she met with reporters Wednesday, a day after she was chosen to fill Knee's office until a new chief is hired.
Ellison, who has a degree in criminal justice from Texas State University, said she doesn't know whether she will apply permanently for Knee's job. It all depends on how the temporary job goes, she said.

"I will either fall in love with it or want to give it up," she said.

Ellison said her initial goal in college was to be a math teacher. Instead, she became the first African American female officer at the Austin Police Department.

She just wanted to try out the job, she said, but she stayed because she never got bored.

Over the years, she has helped establish one of the first police neighborhood centers and worked in the child abuse unit. She said one of her favorite assignments was being a sergeant and working with officers on the street response team.

"You get to mold officers who are new," she said.

Now, she gets to mold the department, to some extent, as city leaders begin what they say will be a nationwide search for a new chief. Assistant City Manager Rudy Garza said Tuesday that the process could take as long as a year.

When she takes over as acting chief June 5, Ellison said, she will increase the number of officers on the immigrant protection team because the number of robberies against immigrants has increased.

She also will continue a process Knee began of changing the way complaints against officers are investigated, moving minor investigations out of Internal Affairs and back to the command level, she said.

Knee has said that the change will speed up resolution of certain citizen complaints against officers, such as rudeness, profanity and failure to take reports.

"The public expects us to do our job to make sure the city is safe," she said.

Former Sgt. John Jones, who worked with Ellison, said she is "quiet and unassuming" but is well-regarded within the department. "I think she has the respect of a great majority of officers down there."

Nelson Linder, president of the Austin chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and a frequent critic of Knee's, said Ellison deserves a chance to prove herself in the top position at the department.

"We're going to be fair and give her a chance to do her job and see what happens," Linder said.

Ellison Shines for Prairie View in loss to TSU

    JARED IS ON FIRE!!!!

The Prairie View A&M Panthers may have lost tonight against Texas Southern, but one thing is certain: Point Guard Jared Ellison made a serious statement tonight and showed why he is the Panthers most experienced player. Ellison led all players on both teams in scoring with 20 points. Jared also had a few steals and a 3 pointer to go with that.   This definently has to be Jared 's best game this season and hopefully it proved all the doubters wrong. Jared will be a force to be reckoned with in the Panthers back court  next season. Way to go Jared!!!

    Fall Update

Bittersweet endings to 4 Fantastic Seasons for Ellisons this Fall.

Josh Ellison and the Spring Westfield Mustanges came up short in their State Championship quest.  They lost to the Judson Rockets 17-14 in San Antonio this past weekend finishing a very successful season. They were District Champions in 22-5A, and also Bi-District, Area, and Regional Champions. Congratulations on a good season Josh!  Landon Ellison and the Dulles Vikings wrapped up their season in early November. The Vikings had easily the most dangerous passing attack in the city. Although their 5-5 does not seem like much, it's a 400% improvement from the previous year and despite being an underdog in every game, Dulles upset alot of quality teams, and took alot of playoff teams to the wire. Shi'Rey Dotson is still doing her thing in San Antonio. The East Central Hornets VolleyBall Team won the District Championship and Sh'Rey is preparing for Basketball Season. (there is a Spring Sports Preview coming soon featuring our Hoopers and Tracksters).  Ashley Geters and the La Marque Band completed their football season after the Brenham Game. Ashley plays Alto Saxophone and we expect big things from her this Spring. Last spring she played in a Saxophone Quartet that received the highest UIL rating possible.

You guys (and girls)  did a great job and represented your family well on the field and in the gym, but more importantly, you were HONOR STUDENTS  as well!

    BIG WEEK FOR ELLISON FAMILY

    Congratulations Monika!

It appears the Ellison Family will add yet another lawyer to the mythical "Ellison Firm". This past Saturday Monika had her going away party here in Houston. She earned a full scholarship to Law School at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In  a few years she will have a law degree like Noni & Chakira. Previously Monika earned a Masters degree from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor's Degree from Prairieview A&M. Good Luck Monika.

Marva Lee also celebrated her 60th birthday this weekend on the Northside of Houston. Several family members were present there as well and it was a great time. Good food, good music, lots of friendly relatives, and plenty of people for me to victimize on the Spades table.

Our cousin Octavia Dotson got married on the 14th of August in San Antonio. We wish her well.

I also made a trip to Dr. Fred O. Ellison's Clinic on the Northside to see how he was doing. It has been a good first week back in Texas, and Im sure there are more to come. I'm about to head to Sugarland right now and catch Landon's scrimmage...

OH YEAH...for all that are interested. We are heading to College Station on Labor Day weekend to listen to and record Uncle Yuman's Oral History tapes at Texas A&M. We will also make a pit stop at the Blue Bell Plant in Brenham, and perhaps a BBQ spot. Until next time...

SH'REY DOTSON Continues Ellison Athletic Success in San Antonio

Sh'rey Antoinette Dotson is one of many young Ellison scholar/athletes competing this School year. She is the daughter of Octavia Dotson of San Antonio, from the Samuel Ellison branch of the Ellison Family.  Sh'Rey begins high school this year at East Central High School in San Antonio. The Freshman recently completed Volleyball tryouts and made the 1st team for the Lady Hornets.

Last school year at Kittyhawk Junior High Sh'rey was a busy girl. She was the ONLY  African-American student from that school to be selected to the National Junior Honor Society with her 3.8 GPA. In addition to playing Volleyball, Sh'Rey was a Guard on the Basketball team and also ran a leg on the 4x100 meter relay. She also is a Long Jumper and Triple Jumper! Although she is a Freshman, be on the lookout for her this year and the next few years. With her outstanding scholastic work and her athletic determination, she is destined for success.

Sh'rey comes from a long line of exceptional Ellison athletes in San Antonio.  Her Great Grandfather Samuel Ellison Jr. was one of the 1st Ellison's to play Collegiate Athletics. He was a basketball player at San Antonio's only HBCU, St. Phillips College.  Herbert Ellison was one of the fastest people to ever come from Texas, winning State Titles in the 200M in 1966 and 67' leading San Antonio Highlands to the Texas State Track Championship. Her Great Uncle, Sam Ellison III also competed in the State Championships in Cross-Country and Track as well as being an All-City Running Back in San Antonio. Her uncle Henry, and cousins Beatrice and Shawanna competed in the AAU Nationals in Track and Field in 1988, where Beatrice was the National Champion in the 800. Her 2nd cousin Michael....that would be me...was an All-City Wide Receiver in San Antonio on the team that eventually won the 1995 Class 5A State Championship. Thanks for keeping the strong Ellison tradition alive Sh'Rey, and you can expect to see some cousins cheering for you this fall

    Julia Ellison Slave Narrative

After some new research this week I have discovered some interesting information.

When I learned about Uncle Yuman’s narrative at Texas A&M I wanted to search for some more and I discovered that Julia Ellison, listed in Generation 2 has a documented narrative as well.  She was actually Jordan and his wife Mary Ellison’s foster child. They were slaves with Julia’s mother, and cared for her since she was a child because her mother was killed.  Here is the story of Julia Ellison  recorded September of 1937  in Fort Worth, TX when  Julia was 79 years old.       *NOTE* I have the original text saved on my computer and I can email it to anyone who is interested. I have translated what I am about to post into somewhat standard English. The recorders wrote it exactly how she sounded words out and it can be difficult to read and comprehend. So I have made it more legible for the website. Julia Ellison was born on the 1000 acre plantation of Judge Ellison near Lockhart TX in 1858 . She lived with our ancestors Jordan and Mary Ellison after her mother was killed by another slave on the plantation.

“I remember being left in the nursery while my mammy worked in the fields. One night she went to the river to wash clothes and a slave snuck up behind her and hit her on the neck, and that was the death of her. So the woman who was the mammy we all lived with (Mary Ellison) took care of me then. When freedom came she moved off the plantation but master would not let me go. So I had to stay with him and run errands and look after his 6 children.  I had to fan the masters babies. It was hard to stand in one place fannin’ babies. I fell fast asleep and was whipped. Even white people visiting told  him any child would fall asleep standing still fannin’ and not moving around. He whipped me anyway and said that was all I was good for.

My foster mother came to master and asked if she could take me and he would not let her. But they got one on him because when he and his wife left the plantation 2 slaves that were on the farm with us during slavery rode by in a wagon and told me to jump in. They took me to my foster mother. She moved, and would’nt let me outside so master could never ever find me.

She explained a lot of things to me. I remember the ladies would stick their heads in the washpots and talk out loud while we were in slavery. She explained to me they were praying for the Lord to take them out of bondage. They felt it was right for them to speak it out loud so God could hear them, but they must’nt let the master hear them. This was one prayer that was answered because you see we are free. I asked her about the whippings and she showed me the many scars on her back. I asked her about my father and she said he was on the plantation but died before I was born. Because he was a big man he was used as the father for many of us. I am no runt, I am 6 feet four inches and could do a days work until I got old.

After my 2nd husband died I washed clothes for a living. I washed the master’s daughters clothes there in Lockhart. The master broke down after freedom came for us. He was powerful while we were in slavery. He had lots of money, wore fine clothes, drove around with horses and carriages. All that changed when we were set free. I seen him laying in the sun like a dog and offered to wash his clothes for free and he just grunted. His daughter said let him alone, he ain’t never did nobody any good.  I still felt sorry for him anyway. He turned stone deaf. White folks say it was because he treated his slaves so badly. They say it was the Lords punishment upon him…”
